After seven years of following my inner guidance to become a member of the Religious Society of Friends, Quakers, I recently gained some insights about that experience. It has been seven years of many inner and outer major shifts and a decision which has brought me only joy. Early on I kept saying ” I’m so happy”, even though looking from the outside things looked the same. Internally I felt filled with Light and a sort of effervescent sense of well being. I kept wondering how becoming a member brought this about.
An answer appeared recently by way of a poem by Gothe. I will share the poem here, but in a nutshell he says that once we make a definite commitment, Providence gains entrance and everything changes. As I look back at my life, it is clear that this happened before with commitments in other arenas. It is more than making a decision about something and willing myself doggedly to stick with it. For me it is more the acceptance of a guidance and then committing to follow through with it, giving it my all, freely and joyfully. I hasten to add that, I have plenty experience of stubbornly willing myself, usually out of some misguided sense of duty or that some outcome must be achieved….naturally through my sweat and tears, so to speak.
Here is the poem.
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back…Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I understand now that there is always the opportunity to say yes to the Divine and in that moment being receptive to the next cycle of my life. Apparently Spirit waits for the invitation for us to say clearly, OK I’m ready for the next step, please show me the way. And then dear friends, hang on. It seems one is never too old to fly.
These thoughts kept me awake till I heard that small voice say, get up and write a blog about this. And so I have.
